Samsung demos 5.68″ foldable AMOLED display

Samsung has already put its flexible display technology into production with the Galaxy Round, but the company is going one step further as it has showcased its first foldable screen. The demo has been conducted at CES to VIPs in the Encore, Las Vegas, where, according to the ETnews sources, the company has shown a 5.68″ prototype.
Interestingly, the display of the AMOLED variety, but unlike the flexible display of the Round, the new method used in the foldable display allows it to bend in two. The new foldable display is also touch sensitive, thanks to a new tech Samsung has developed. It allows the engineers to place a touch screen panel using a layer of metal mesh technology.
Galxay Round’s flexible display, which uses ITO (indium tin oxide), can only bend to a certain degree before having its connectors snapped. Samsung won’t be placing the display into mass production until 2015, so we still have to wait for a while before we get a Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which at the push of a button turns into a 5.68″ smartphone

Android-running Nokia Normandy spotted once again

The codenamed Normandy, Android-powered Nokia smartphone has leaked once again. This time around we get to see a live picture of the KitKat-running handset and a glimpse of Nokia's proprietary launcher.
We already saw the Normandy numerous times in the wild, so we know pretty much everything there is to know about the anticipated droid - we know itsspecs, how it looks and even an alleged announcement date during the MWC this year.
And now, in case you've wondered what a Nokia-designed Android launcher would look like, you get a chance to see it. It's obviously inspired by the Asha lineup as is the hardware of the prototype and is unlike anything else in the market right now.
If the rumors are true we should be seeing Normandy go official next month in Barcelona. Or sometime later this year,

The Onewheel self-balancing, single-wheeled skateboard

It's hard not to do a double-take when first laying eyes on the Onewheel. After all, it is a single-wheeled skateboard that uses an electric motor, accelerometers, gyros and a microcontroller to give riders a smooth, self-balancing ride. The contraption's creator, Kyle Doerksen,.
If the sight of a metal frame, wooden deck and a chunky go-kart wheel didn't convey a sense of great build quality, laying hands on (and picking up) the 25-pound package drives home its heavy-duty nature. When it comes to speed, the deck can go as fast as 12 MPH, but Doerksen tells us its acceleration is software-limited to allow for better self-balancing (and maybe even to protect users from overdoing it). As for range, Onewheel can go from four to six miles on a single charge thanks to a lithium battery, and it can be juiced up in two hours -- or 20 minutes with an "ultra" charger. What's more, the gadget sports regenerative braking to recoup roughly 30 percent of expended energy. Unfortunately, the device only has about 20 minutes worth of ride time in its battery, though that changes with terrain and personal driving style.
Riding the board for the first time feels a lot like learning how to use a bicycle. The first few tries weren't much more than attempting to maintain balance while stationary, but I managed to stay planted and mobile much longer with each try. It might sound strange to have trouble keeping your balance on a self-balancing skateboard, but the board's chops truly shine once you get going. Tilt forward or backward ever so slightly (while holding down a silver button with your foot) to start moving in one direction, and lean even further to pick up speed. Turning is also a matter of throwing a bit of weight in the direction you wish to go. The hefty tire gives the board a smooth ride -- which Doerksen likens more to snowboarding than skateboarding -- even making for a fluid cruise on cracked and uneven asphalt.

Beats Music to launch January 21st

If you're a big music fan, circle January 21st on your calendar. That is the date when streaming music service Beats Music is expected to launch. The service will be available for all major mobile platforms. According to a published report on Saturday, Beats Music will be different from the competition, which it sees as aiming for the early adopters.

Tapping on bubbles that appear on your touchscreen will help you select your favorite styles. Tap once for "like, twice for "love" and a longpress will make a particular bubble disappear. Repeat with specific artists, and you've given the service enough information to come up with a custom playlist. And the list continues to change as the service adds more information about the music that you're listening to.

You can change your playlist depending on your location and current activity. For example, "Eye of the Tiger" might not be a  song
you would want to listen to while kicking back after a hard day at the office, but it is a perfect song to motivate you while jogging. The service will cost $10 for access to 20 million tunes when it is launched. This is already a crowded space to begin with, but Beats Music has some deep pockets that should allow it a fighting chance for survival..

LiFi uses light to send and receive data

A company at CES, Oledcomm, displayed its LiFi method of transmitting data via light. A plain android handset was modified by replacing the front-facing camera with a light sensor, and pulsating streams of light were used for the transmission of information. To the naked eye, these appear as a steady stream of light. Besides outfitting a smartphone in this manner, a tablet also had its front-facing snapper replaced. Both devices require a special LiFi dongle, which is plugged into the ear phone jack

After installing a special app on the phone and tablet, holding either device near lamplight set off a number of events, including the displaying of certain pictures, the playing of a video or the booting up of specific games. Oledcomm believes that its LiFi technology can be also used for location based advertising, similar to what Apple is doing with the iBeacon in its retail stores

First things first, Oledcomm needs to convince smartphone manufacturers to include its light sensors on their brand new smartphones rolling out of the factory. You can see the technology on a concept phone, and the dongle necessary, by clicking on the slideshow below.

The latest update, v2.11.356, for the popular messaging application, however, fixes this issue.
The newest update doesn’t offer any additional features, such as allowing users to send music files, but many believe that this will be available soon.
If you’ve been having some WhatsApp grief on your Windows Phone, then don’t delay and head straight to the Windows Phone Store and download the update today.

Sony WP smartphone to come in 2014 under the Vaio brand

It appears that the negotiations between Sony and Microsoft have ended up successfully and the Japanese company will indeed be joining the list of Windows Phone hardware manufacturers. Microsoft’s Windows Phone director Greg Sullivan has confirmed that Sony will be releasing its own WP smartphone in 2014.
Better yet, the device is said to hit the market by the middle of the year, so we won’t even have to wait that long to see it. The new Sony smartphone will be carrying the Vaio brand, which should help you tell that it’s running a different OS from the Xperia handsets. With the limited customization options provided by the Microsoft partners, the Vaio smartphone will be relying on the Sony proprietary services such as Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited to help it stand out in the crowd.
The news that Sony and Microsoft have reached an agreements comes as little surprise, given that the deal will obviously be beneficial to both company. Sony has already expressed its desire to add a second platform to its smartphone lineup and Windows Phone is the most obvious choice. Microsoft, on the other hand, is looking to expand the reach of its mobile OS and a major manufacturer such as Sony will definitely help. Not to mention that the two companies have quite the long history of partnership in both mobile (remember Windows Mobile?) and desktop platforms.

Nokia Lumia Black update

Nokia’s long-awaited Lumia Black update is now seeding to devices worldwide. The first Nokia smartphones to get the treatment are the Lumia 1020 and Lumia 925. More Nokia Lumia models will receive the update in the coming weeks.

The Nokia Lumia Black update brings a host of new features to the Finnish company’s Windows Phone range. They include the ability to organize apps into folders, improved Glance screen, Bluetooth 4.0 support, and Nokia Beamer. The latter is available to devices with at least 1GB of RAM. It allows users to share documents and any type of multimedia content to any HTML5 capable display by scanning a QR code.

Naturally, the already stellar imaging capabilities of the Nokia Lumia range have been further enhanced by the latest update. Previously available only for PureView devices, Nokia Camera has been brought to the rest of the Lumia range. Nokia Storyteller will also be preloaded.
Even more importantly, Nokia Lumia Black update brings improved imaging algorithms. They are said drastically improve the image quality, particularly on the Nokia Lumia 1020.

Sony confirms talks with Microsoft on releasing a Windows Phone

Pierre Perron, head of Sony Mobile Europe, has confirmed in an interview that the company is actively examining the release of its own Windows Phone handset. Now that Microsoft bought out nokia, the field is somewhat more open for business from other companies, too, and with Redmond's cash in hand, the Windows Phone ecosyatem  is likely to receive a big boost in sales and popularity numbers, if the cards are played right.

Mr Perron is quoted below to say that they want to bring the typical Sony flavor on top of Windows Phone, which we hope will mean a pretty waterproof handset with high-res camera.

Subway surfers in INDIAN style

Subway Surfers, the hit endless running game has been on a world tour for a while. After hit editions of the subway vandals pacing around in London, Sydney and Rome, Kiloo Games has brought the hit franchise to India now.
With an update to your game, you will now be able to pace around in the “colourful streets” of Mumbai and dodge trains in the city. The tracks are lined with fruit stalls and the game is decked up with a lot more earthy colours. If you’ve ever been to the city, you’ll find that the game shows off trains in the same brown and cream colour as Mumbai's famous 'locals'.
Welcome to Mumbai

The game also adds a new collectible character called Jay you can use while playing. The character looks suspiciously similar to Milkha Singh as portrayed by Farhan Akhtar in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, down to the number tag attached on the back of his shirt. Interestingly, even the inspector in the game that chases the characters is dressed up in khaki colours to go with the uniform worn by police officers in the city. You will now have to collect a total of 10 lotuses (lotuses in an election year? Fishy…) in the game while playing. Check out the gameplay:

For those not in the know, Subway Surfers features subway vandals Jake, Tricky and Fresh run away from the police inspector and his dog after painting on the train cars. You also have to dodge the oncoming trains while collecting coins in the meanwhile. Special objects such as a jetpack, jumping shoes and a hoverboard are peppered through the track and the object is to run as long as possible, while completing mini challenges along the way. You can also challenge and help your friends from within the game.
The game finally made its way to Windows Phone in December but surprisingly, that version of the game is still stuck in the London leg of the World Tour. You can, however, run through the streets of Mumbai on your Android and iOS devices.

Airtel offering huge discounts on older BlackBerry phones

Just two days after BlackBerry slashed the price of the Q5, Bharti Airtel has introduced a sales drive that could end up clearing much of BlackBerry's stock. Airtel users buying Blackberry phones will now get quite healthy discounts depending on the phone they buy. Quite bafflingly, it's not the newer BlackBerry 10-running smartphones that are available under this scheme, but only two phones that run BlackBerry 7.
India's leading telco is offering up to 16 percent off on the BlackBerry 9720, which means users can buy the handset for Rs 13,490 instead of its earlier price tag that read Rs 15,990. The 9720 blends a QWERTY keyboard with a 2.8-inch touch display, but runs on the older BB7 OS. The older Curve series is also on sale; Airtel offers a 33 percent discount and has slashed the price of the BlackBerry Curve 9220 to Rs 7,999. The device was earlier priced at Rs 11,990.

Price slashed

Earlier this week, the company announced price drop for the BlackBerry Q5 to Rs 19,999 as a New Year offer. The company said the move was “in line with BlackBerry's commitment towards the Indian market and will help the brand to reach out to more potential customers”, though there's a feeling, the company is preparing to launch newer models, which will replace the BB10 handsets released last year. BlackBerry has also tied up with Foxconn to build budget BB10 phones for 2014.
Launched in July 2013 for Rs 24,990, the Q5 was BlackBerry’s attempt to bring BB10 to the budget segment, even though it wasn’t really competing with low-cost Androids at that price range. As we found in our review, the performance of the phone was under par and it didn’t have much going for it in terms of user experience either. The touch and QWERTY combination is not exactly the right showcase for the OS, which already faced severe criticism for the lack of native apps.

Alleged Apple iPhone 6 frame leaks

It's still pretty early for believable leaks of the whole design (those start popping up closer to the announcement) but some parts are certainly already in testing so there might be something to this.
Straight off Chinese leakster CTech responsible for credible specs leaks and a video of a working iPhone 5c in the wild come two images of what appears to be a metal housing. According to the source the housing could belong to the upcoming iPhone 6.

Nokia Normandy leaks yet again, runs on Android KitKat

The rumors of the notorious Nokia Normandy prototype running on Android has been around for quite some time. Even though the company's Devices and Services division is soon to be acquired by Microsoft, it seems the Normandy rumors continue, suggesting the device might come to live against all odds.
Last month we learned the codenamed Normandy device is supposed to be an entry-level Android smartphone. The leaks suggested Normandy will be reusing the iconic Lumia design and will come in a plethora of different colors, just like the affordable Asha and Lumia phones.
Today the famous tipster @evleaks has posted renders of Normandy running on Android. We get to see a glimpse of Nokia's launcher, particularly the lockscreen, Viber and Skype apps. Judging by the Normandy's status bar, this should be a dual-SIM phone.
Another leaks from today sheds some more light on the alleged Normandy specs. As it turns out someone has put the Normandy through AnTuTu's test, so we can see some of its specs. Nokia RM-980 A110 codenamed Normandy reported featuring a 4" FWVGA display (480x854 pixels), a 5MP rear camera and runs on Android 4.4.1 KitKat. Naturally, the chipset powering the Normandy is Qualcomm Snapdragon.

Change Your Friends’ Profile Picture

Nah, you’ll not be making the change globally, but changing your friend’s profile picture only on your phone is sufficient to scare the hell outta him. Here’s how you can do it.
  1. Choose a profile picture for your friend. Use Google Image search for cute looking monkeys and donkeys or weird looking people.
  2. Resize the image to 561×561 pixels and name it with your friend’s mobile phone number.
  3. Save the image in SD card -> WhatsApp -> Profile Pictures. Overwrite an existing image if required.
  4. Disable WiFi and data network. If you don’t WhatsApp will automatically update the picture. Now show it to your friend who’ll panic instantly!

Micromax Canvas LapTab hands-on

Micromax outed its new Canvas Laptab at CES 2014 and got a chance to take it out for a spin. The device is a part of a new trend of devices that’s able to dual-boot both Android 4.2.2 and Windows 8.1, and seamlessly switch between them.
It’s all thanks to Intel’s new “dual OS platform” technology that allows you to run both OSs on a single device, and we already saw it in action on the Asus Transformer Book Duet.

Meet Edison, Intel’s SD card-sized computer

Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel debuted the Edison, “a full Pentium-class PC” at CES and here’s the kicker: it’s the size of an SD card.
What’s even more impressive is the list of specs for the computer’s tiny size: it has a dual-core Quark SOC, Bluetooth, and WiFi all jammed into the tiny package. The Edison runs on Linux and even has its own app store that Intel specifically designed for its little computer. The Edison will also come with a special version of Wolfram out of the box.
Speaking of “the box” it’s uncertain as to whether or not the Edison will be sold as a device for general consumers in mind. The device is intended for developers and “tinkerers” around the world. But so is Raspbery Pie and it’s been doing great so far.
Intel reinforced this idea with their “Nursery 2.0″ concept. They showcased a Mimo Onesie outfitted with the Edison. In the concept, the lilliputian computing unit was able to track temperature to make sure the baby was comfortable. They were able to display the baby’s stats on a coffee mug. A blinking green light showing a happy face meant that the baby was comfortable. A red blinking light showing a sad face means that the baby isn’t content.
