Supersized Specs Squabble: Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Google Nexus 5

Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Google Nexus 5

How do the tech world’s two most anticipated devices stack up against each other? KYMI finds out

Samsung and Goggle have both climbed to the top of their games with their formidable offerings – the Galaxy S4 and the Nexus 4. From all that is rumoured about the next iterations of the devices, however, the two tech majors are all set to stun the market once again in the coming months. We pit the Galaxy S5 against the Nexus 5 to find the most feature laden, functional smartphone of all.
  • Form
Galaxy S5: Larger than the Galaxy S4 (rumoured)
Nexus 5: 5-inch display (rumoured)
The Galaxy S5 is speculated to look like a typical Sasmung handset, but with a difference. Instead of the plastic casing we all love to hate, the smartphone reportedly sports an aluminum chassis and a slimmer, lighter body than before. If the Galaxy Note 3 is anything to go by, the next Samsung high-ender will come with straighter lines, smaller curves and ultra thin bezels. The phone is expected to be sleek and slim, though larger than its predecessor. Samsung has reportedly given it a water proof cover as well.
The Nexus 5 is apparently designed on the lines of the LG G2 with its slightly curved top and bottom. Leaked images of the handset suggest that it sports a slim, sleek and lightweight form and a soft-touch, matte finish back panel. Word around the tech world is that it might come in a champagne gold variant as well.
Samsung wins this round with its improved build quality and water proof casing.
Winner: Galaxy S5
  • Display
Both handsets are rumoured to sport a Full HD display and offer users richness of contrasts and brightness of colours. Though there is no official word out about the Galaxy S5’s display, it is expected to be larger than that of the Galaxy S4 and come based on Super AMOLED technology. The Nexus 5’s screen is leaked to be a 5-inch IPS LCD one, with a pixel density of 442ppi.
With gorgeous displays expected on both phones, this round ends in a draw – for now.
Winner: Draw
  • Processor
Word around the tech world is that Samsung is prepping its next big offering with a powerful 64-bit processor and a 3 GB RAM. Google is reportedly packing the Nexus 5 in with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core 2.3 GHz chipset, complete with its Adreno 330 GPU. The phone sports a RAM of 2 GB.
The Galaxy S5 wins this round with its powerful inners.
Winner: Galaxy S5
  • Storage
Samsung is likely to offer its next flagship in variants of 16, 32 and 64 GB, each with support for external memory expansion by up to 64 GB. The Nexus 5 is said to retail in two models – one with 16 GB of in-built memory and the other with 32 GB.
Samsung wins this round with its better storage options.
Winner: Galaxy S5

  • Operating System
The Nexus 5 is said to be the first handset to carry Android’s next operating system 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Given that the Galaxy S5 will release later, it should ideally carry the same build too. Android 4.4 is expected to bring a host of improvements to the platform, including a more functional version of Google Now, and both phones are believed to be user friendly and intuitive. Samsung, of course, will build its offering with a host of its own add-ons like its voice and gesture activated controls.
Some users may prefer Google’s stock build of Android while others may enjoy Samsung’s add-ons. As far as operating systems go, this round ends in a draw.
Winner: Draw
  • Camera
Samsung is said to be prepping its latest flagship with a 16-megapxiel camera that packs in a bunch of modern features. Its secondary camera reportedly sports a number of improvements too.
The Nexus 5 is being built with a secondary 1.3-megapixel front-facer and an 8-megapixel primary camera that sports a resolution of 3264 x 2449 pixels. It comes with a back-illuminated sensor (BSI), an f/2.4 aperture, a 1/3.2-inch sensor size, optical image stabilization and an LED flash.
The most interesting rumour about the set-up is that is based on MEMS technology that gives it an extremely fast autofocus and an improved multishot mode. Its Lytro camera style functionality captures and stores so much visual information that one can snap an image and edit whatever focal point one desires later.
Samsung scores with its additional megapixels but Google wins brownie points for its MEMS technology.
Winner: Draw
  • Conclusion
The Galaxy S5 is sure to be every bit a high-end flagship device with its powerful inners, plentiful storage, cool gesture controls and premium built - it is sure to keep Samsung at the top of its game for a long time to come.
The future looks really bright for Google too, with all the functional features the Nexus 5 is reported to carry. The Nexus 5 has the additional appeal of a far more reasonable price tag as well. With its gorgeous display, sophisticated camera and functional operating system, it could well be the smartphone every one craves to own.
